"The Contemporary Theater Company is dedicated to bringing professional quality theater to South County. Our goal is to explore the possibilities of live performance, making it an accessible component of our community and providing a unique and engaging theater-going experience for all."
- CTC Mission Statement

The traveling Contemporary Theater Company was founded in June 2005 as the Courthouse Summer Theater Company. It started as a collaborative project among young local artists interested in restoring the once vibrant live theater scene of southern Rhode Island. After one successful year the name was changed to the Courthouse Theater Company, the vision matured, and our development began expanding the local theater company's endeavors.

Since then, the company has prospered, producing more than a dozen full-length productions and smaller events. Our talent pool expanded, our generous community support helped make it possible and thousands of audience members held a new appreciation of the performing arts.

As our company has grown, so has our vision. Early in 2009 we rechristened ourselves The Contemporary Theater Company to better reflect our new direction. A dedication to bringing theater and the arts to everyone remains a central part of who we are, but with a new emphasis on artistic integrity and social engagement. We like to think that we're a little theater with a very big act.

That doesn't mean we don't have fun. In early 2010, the Providence Phoenix called us the "Best New and Yummy Theater Troupe" in all of Rhode Island. To be honest, we're not quite sure what that means, but it sounds delicious.
